Mustang 1964 1/2 - 1966 only has the following stainless steel components.
1. Window trim front and rear.
2. Windscreen wiper blade retainer section.
3. Front quarter window glass frame (1 piece two sides, front and bottom)
4. Rear quarter window glass frame (1 piece one, back)
5. Door windows glass frame (1 piece, top)
6. Drip rail mouldings (2 pieces, lhs and rhs)
7. Aerial (retractable part only)
If you are polishing window trim then ensure that you have removed any dents. Best results are achieved if the item is removed from the vehicle.
Ensure that the good side is well supported so further damage does not occur during the following procedure.
Dents can be removed by pushing from the underside or rubbing a smooth piece of metal on the raised section.
If this fails to achieve the desired look then; Use various pieces of metal "dolly's" and a small panel beating hammer and drifts.
Aluminium and mild steel works well. Support the good side (face down) and place the metal on the underside and tap gently with a suitable dolly that matches the contour of the moulding. Reverse the previous statement if the dent comes outward instead on inwards. A combination of tapping from the back and front may be required. Remember to place a suitable support on the opposite side that you are tapping.
Masking/Electrical tape can be applied to the top surface to minimize bruising whilst tapping down the raised section. Take your time and don't hit the moulding too hard, as it’s thin and will damage easily.
If the items have been removed from the car then follow this procedure:
1. Use Wet and dry paper to take out any deep scratches. Use on cork or wood
block to achieve best result.
Start of with course i.e. 800 then work down to 1200 then finally 2400.
2. Use a cloth-polishing wheel on the bench grinder and two different polishing compounds. You can get the first two compounds from Bunnings. There is a white and green brick shape that you rub on the spinning cloth wheel. This places a small amount of compound on the wheel. When you are polishing make sure you have any edges pointing downwards.
3. When happy with finish use Autosol on cloth and rub until deep shine is achieved.
If the item has not been removed from the car then you will need to mask around the area and use a cloth-polishing wheel on a slow speed angle grinder. The remainder of the steps above are applicable.
